Laurel Smith Vouvray-Acting coach and mentor

Laurel In the Moment Acting

Laurel Smith Vouvray studied in New York City at The Neighborhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner and at HB Studios under the guidance of Uta Hagen.

After a successful career as a theatre director and casting director in her native New York City, she moved to Los Angeles where she continued her career as a casting director, casting over 30 films–giving Renee Zellweger and Kevin Spacey their first industry-recognizable lead roles along the way. Her eye for talent and head for the business allowed her to work with Dustin Hoffman, Liam Neeson, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, John Malkovich, Martin Sheen, Adrian Brody, Oliver Platt, Ellen Burstyn, Benicio Del Toro, Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves, Tim Roth, and many others.

In 1999, she founded The Actor’s Avenue acting studio in Portland, Oregon, where she dedicated herself to creating fully realized and responsible actors by teaching the Meisner Technique in a style that made her the most sought-after acting coach in the Pacific Northwest. Many of her former students are now working in film and TV, and on the stage in NYC and LA.

Laurel was also a founding member of the MCC Theatre in NYC and directed ‘Everything We’ve Ever Wanted‘ there in the late ’80’s.

Some of Laurel’s work as a Casting Director can be seen on IMDB here.

Student Testimonials

Laurel’s students have gone on to act, direct, and produce professionally for decades. Most recently her students have found success in TV, Film, and on Broadway. Credits include various genres spanning from Ashoka (Eman Esfandi, Star Wars TV series) and An Enemy of the People (Alan Trong, Broadway Play) to Walker (Jessica Irvine Drake, TV The CW). Local agents and casting directors encourage local actors to study with Laurel when preparing for professional work in Texas and beyond.

It’s incredibly difficult to cross paths with teachers nowadays who genuinely care about each individual person that walks through the door. A lot of acting schools can feel washed out. Laurel is someone who chooses to believe in the underdog. She cares, a lot.

At her school, you’ll be able to witness night after night that talent isn’t necessary-that you can learn how to do something through consistency, discipline, and curiosity. She is not interested in glamour. Like a true New Yorker, she cuts through the fat and meets each student exactly where they are in their life. She encourages playfulness. She wants you to be bold regardless if you feel confident or not. To her, it’s beside the point.

Year after year, I’d sharpen the ability to be affected by what is in front of me. To not plan anything. To seek discomfort. But most importantly, to be honest. This alone has been my foundation for every single job I’ve ever been on. I learned how to transfer my anxiety into courage at this school. I learned how to embrace uncertainty here. I learned how to tell the truth here.

I studied under Laurel at a crucial moment in my filmmaking career before directing my first feature film TRANSPECOS.

Her class gave me a profound understanding of the actor’s process, how to understand the craft but also how to embrace the great mystery of performance, and ultimately give yourself over to the moment.

I learned how to give direction in many ways that open doors for an actor’s imagination rather than close them. Her teaching was transformational for me as a filmmaker and as a human being.

There aren’t enough words to express my gratitude for having been in Laurel’s class in the first 2 years of my acting career. Laurel has such a deep understanding of the needs of her students and how to seamlessly adjust her teaching method to connect with each individual person. She helped me build a solid foundation of being in the moment, character building, auditioning, and connecting with scene partners.

Laurel is not only an excellent teacher, she is an amazing person. She cares deeply about her students, building their love for the art, giving them a realistic understanding of what this industry requires, and how to stay grounded in the process. She does not sugar coat anything. Her honesty comes from a place of love and trust.

I will forever cherish my growth as an artist in her class and the self-confidence she helped me build at a time I felt overwhelmed, insecure, and lost! Looking back, years later, I have a much better understanding of how lucky I was to have Laurel as my teacher. I know now just how difficult it can be to find an acting coach as invested, skilled, and genuine as Laurel.

I cannot recommend Laurel enough. She is not a quick fix teacher. If you put in the work, she will help build you into an artist. If you are on the fence about joining [classes], jump in and get ready to work hard. You are in great hands.

Laurel [Smith] Vouvray is one of the best teachers and mentors I’ve ever had. Her understanding of acting and presence go so far beyond their applications to film/theatre. She cuts straight to the truth of a moment and creates an environment where it is safe for you to sit with that truth.

I’ve seen her transform students who were unable to read lines or stand up in front of a classroom and introduce themselves, to be able to embody bombastic and explosive characters that evoke every emotion imaginable. Aside from the ability to produce talent, her mentorship and guidance is always with the artist’s growth and development in mind.

She taught me life lessons that I’ve carried with me from their first applications in student short films to sets of the biggest productions in Hollywood. They’re timeless and can be applied across disciplines. It’s an honor to have learned about acting under her tutelage and I will be forever grateful for her patience and kindness. Thank you for everything, Laurel!

No teacher has had more of an effect on my professional life than Laurel [Smith] Vouvray. More than ten years since my introduction to Laurel, and those first few lessons in her classroom are still the foundation of how I approach any character on any project.

Laurel brings her lifetime of experience and lessons from hundreds of students into every interaction. But more than just skill, she teaches respect for the craft and for the actor’s journey. She is an incredible resource and champion for the art of acting, both inside and outside of Texas. I could not be more honored to be counted among her students.

I have always said that Laurel’s classes feel like therapy–she has a unique ability to help you break down walls you didn’t even realize were there. Her approach goes beyond acting; it’s about self-discovery, growth, and unlocking the most honest version of yourself. Her guidance has been life-changing, shaping not just my craft but also my confidence and mindset as an actor.

It wasn’t until I was in my 40s that I finally gained real momentum in my career, and I credit much of that to the tools and discipline I developed in Laurel’s classes. She creates an environment where actors feel both challenged and supported, pushing us to new depths in our work. Because of her expertise, I’ve learned how to be more truthful and connected in my performances, and that has been instrumental to my success.

Laurel is, without a doubt, the best acting coach I have ever had. Her wisdom, encouragement, and guidance over the past ten years have been invaluable, and the impact she has had on both my career and personal growth is immeasurable. I am forever grateful.

Laurel Vouvray taught me to love the craft of acting and bestowed an appreciation of theater and film that has forever changed my life. I can never un-learn the lessons she taught which, to me, shows how powerful they are. She showed me what being a good actor means and it starts [with] being an empathetic human being.

I’ve studied with so many great teachers from New York to Los Angeles but I always come back to what has been most impactful, the lessons from ‘In the Moment Studio’ with Laurel.

True acting coaches aren’t just hard to find, they’re an absolute rarity, and the fact that one as skilled and intuitive as Laurel Vouvray is living in Austin, Texas is a gem that most of this city is completely unaware of. I wouldn’t say that Laurel is the best coach in this city, I’d say that she’s the best of her kind in the entire country.

As an actor who’s worked professionally in LA, New York, Vancouver, and Chicago, I’ve not encountered another coach that has the capability of plumbing the depths of both great work and the human psyche such as Laurel can. She not only sees the work the actor is presenting, she sees the full depth of the person as a whole. The unique and true gift to truly look inside someone and see their soul in an instant. It’s a skill that’s often unnerving and bordering magic, one that comes from years of experience with the technique and a heart that’s as big and truly loving as hers is for the craft she so powerfully conveys.

She deeply cares for each of her students, and pushes them to limits they themselves are unaware they’re capable of. You won’t find a better coach, and you’d be hard put to find a better person.

For me, Laurel represents the bridge I walked across to becoming a real actor and a more present human. There was before Laurel and after Laurel, and she made all the difference.

She is everything I want in an acting teacher: she’s honest, she’s generous, she’s knowing, she’s tough and she’s funny. She is incredibly talented and knows what it takes to be great. She will see your potential and if you are committed, she will stick with you and see you through your specific hills to climb.

Laurel gives her actors the greatest gift which is the constant reminder to take your focus off yourself and put it on the person in front of you – to really listen and respond truthfully. Her knowledge and unique understanding of the Meisner Technique is unparalleled and she will give you everything she’s got if you are willing to put the work in.

Laurel is an incredible teacher and person, and I’ve yet to meet anyone that matches her authenticity and deep humanity. She made me realize that being an actor can be a worthy endeavor, and I am forever grateful to her for her wisdom, guidance, and support through the years. She’s the real deal, and if you’re serious about acting, then I cannot recommend her highly enough.
